Title: So Wissa...
Description: Am I allowed to say anything...
Damar - February 22, 2010 05:26 PM (GMT)
Without being banned, or worse, my warning level being lowered?
Glad you guys paid 120 million dollars to "own the podium" while the Americans are totally renting it out for free.
Shit. I said something.
Tiki Barber did a report around Vancouver, asking canadians what their second favorite sport was, and the answers were...
Drinking and sex.
See, all is not lost.
VioletCloud - February 22, 2010 09:52 PM (GMT)
Damar you are so mean!
So I was watching Olympic junk today... and the US skater guy who won a gold and a silver said that while he was at the medal cermony, the US/Canada game was going on, and everyone was alll "go canada" and he was all "go america"
all I could think was.. wow that is ignorant. Canada is America..
North America is a freaking continent. United States is a country.
sure sure.. United States of America... "OF"
DNesh - February 22, 2010 10:57 PM (GMT)
Canada is America.
Since when?
What am I missing.
It is probably obvious in the games he means the USA.
Aside from that I did not see the event you did.
I have been watching though.
The games have been great.
I always feel dread when I see somone with high aspirations wipe-out.
Like last night the skier who's dad was from Canada so he qualified for the Canadian team. He was really gunning for a higher medal than bronze...and, he wiped out..skies going all crazy in the air. He had a great back story that made you root for him...he was 23...and, he wiped. I felt the heartbreak...
:crying:

Well, since Candians and Mexicans don't refer to themselves as "Americans" and refer to US as American's, and since Mexico, Canada nor any other North American dwelling nation has the actual word "America" in their official title, (except, of course, for the United States of America)I think it's safe to say that in the common vernacular "Americans" (or America) is an acceptable use of title for us United Statesians.
EDIT:
We're also the first modern independent nation* on this continent, so I think we above all others, rate.
* Yes, I realize that Indians were here first but people get conquered, such is life. They had no problem conquering each-other... power flows to the mighty.

Anyhow, there are some pretty smart responses in that thread. Idiots, some but some really good ones, the others.
wissaboo - February 22, 2010 11:33 PM (GMT)
people from europe refer to canadians as americans because we live in north america. Have absolutely no idea how the fact that you were an independent country first applies to the conversation at all.
canada is expected to do better in medal count the second week then the first but have already beaten any other winter olympic total so have already won as far as I am concerned. And lets not forget that canada has 1/10 the population as the united states. So realistically will rarely beat them.
and do you guys even consider how offensive you are being some times?

I posted this in that thread I posted, but the term Americans came into being long before there was a United States. At the time the British colonies were the only real thriving colonies on the continent. Canada was a French deal that eventually became British (until that time was not much more than an industry) similarly, Spanish America was more of a Catholic mission to the Americas in an attempt to reap souls and gold.
The main group of peoples here, and really the only major group of Europeans, designated themselves as Americans. It's only by chance that they would become the United States of America later on.
The other nations on the continent(s) did not become anything other than Spanish, Portuguese, French... until years later.
So, what I was trying to say is that they were the first to actually develop the term use in that way. In today's world it would have been copyrighted.
I have never heard of Canadians being refered to as Americans by Euros, but I googled it, just now, and found a pretty pissed off Canadian asking why the hell Europeans would do such an egregious thing. Evidently, you guys are pretty proud to be Canadians and not Americans. As you should be.
I have no idea what you mean by the medals. And I do not intend to be offensive in any way.
wissaboo - February 23, 2010 12:01 AM (GMT)
I didn't say I liked being called american, I just said it is common

I have never heard that before. From my experience through the eyes of my cousin I would not know that.
My cousin...the world traveler...has been telling the rest of the world he is Canadian when abroad....and, never American....going back to the 1970's when he learned as an 18 year old the rest of the world thinks Americans are rich.....and, the dislike was not worth telling them he was American.
I have never heard of Europe calling Canadians Americans.
I think that would be news to my cousin who has been everywhere three times over. He doesn't tell anyone he is American. They would think he was from America and not Canada. :idon'tknow:
We have enough europeans on these boards. I guess we can find out easy enough. I would find that interesting. Live and learn!

spocklet - February 23, 2010 03:35 AM (GMT)
Well, now that I've finally read all your posts, I think I know where it's going. When I've heard an American-sounding accent, I've asked where in the US they're from, and been quick to apologise for my mistake when they said Canada. I've never referred to Canada as America, I think to do so would be rude, nor heard other Brits refer to it that way. Never been to Canada, sadly, though it's on my to-do list.
For what it's worth, we Brits sometimes forget that we're not one country but several; England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Northern Ireland (though Ireland is not actually part of UKGB, only the North). I have heard the UK referred to as simply 'England', and the news/weather people are the worst offenders. TRUE Brits are the Welsh (celts), they were here long before the rest of us, who invaded the UK over the centuries (mostly from Scandinavia and occasionally France) making it what it is today. Though English, I prefer to think of myself as a Yorkshireman, as opposed to the filthy Lancastrians (hehe, sorry Lus).

I've noticed that Canada and Canadians exhibit a sort of national pride that we Americans often get castigated for by, well... Canadians and Europeans (especially a few self loathing Brits I am very fond of).

If every other country in the Americas decided to add "of America" to the end of their country's names, that'd certainly take the thunder out of their clouds.
Canada of America
Brazil of America
Mexico of America
Jamaica of America
Then everybody would see just how dumb it is..... Spain of Europe.
China of Asia.
Antarctica of.... er.... Antarctica.
I mean of course the US is of America.... I don't know of any other "United States" nations in the world.... but just in case you didn't know exactly who everybody is talking about.... they're OF AMERICA, thus Americans.

Well my wife when coming here to Canada was often mistaken for being British (she's Australian) and quite often when Canadians are abroad, we are thought of as "Americans" as in from the US, but it's mainly due to our accents being somewhat similar.
I don't call myself American... sure we're all in the Americas, but where I live, we staked a claim on this land and called this part of the Americas "Canada" thus Canadian.... and if some wank in another country wants to call me otherwise, they shall be mesmerized by my Atlantic Canadian Silver Tongue.
We do swear a lot over here and have an opinion about almost everything, but it gives us something to do.
Maybe I'll throw in a little Newfoundland or Nova Scotia Sou'Shore at em, really screw em up.... or maybe if someone from Israel mistaken's what country I'm from I'll just reply "That's ok, you Germans all sound the same too"
OooOOoooo.... too touchy? Maybe I should have said French.

You guys do it like the Cry Wolf kid any chance you can get, it sorta loses all meaning.
Besides, it's typical of Canadians.... We get all pumped up, all excited, brag our greatness, claim to win everything and the sun, and then when it comes down to crunch time, we get half the things we expected, just barely get a passing grade, don't quite reach our own claims..... and like the Apathetic Canadians we are, we'll just shrug our shoulders and say "Meh.... Good Enough I guess" and then hide in the snow for another few years to be forgotten about.

Trust me when I say this, you guys chest thump at least as much as we do and in many cases more than we do. And I'm not just talking about the Olympics.
In either event, I see nothing wrong a steady show of national pride, especially when both nations have a lot to be proud of.

I just think in a world event.. such as the Olympics, people should give a little thought as to what things sound like.

So...Go USA! would be more appropriate especially at a world event.
Alisium - February 23, 2010 11:30 PM (GMT)
I totally get what you're saying. I don't agree with it, though.
I don't see why we should change 300 years of rather innocuous tradition that is generally accepted world-wide because a few have a problem with the semantics of it all or to accommodate some pc mentality or both.
Canada of America
Brazil of America
Mexico of America
Jamaica of America
True, except Jamaica is an island off the coast of America so technically not part of America AND none of those nations has the actual word America in their official name, long or short form.
However, if you guys want to rename your nation "The United Parliamentary Commonwealth of Federated Provinces and Territories of America" and, in turn, want to call yourselves, Americans, I won't begrudge any Canadian from doing so.
And if Mexico wants to change from The United Mexican States to The United American States...
I may laugh at the inability to be you're own people, but do as you wish.
