Title: flooring.
wissaboo - March 23, 2010 08:32 PM (GMT)
You have no idea what a big issue this can be if you own property.
anywhoo.
my kitchen has some ugly beat up linoleum on it and my dining room has some old fir wood floor with finish on only half of it. This may we will have been living in this house for 8 years and for all of those years I have been trying to decide what kind of flooring to put down.
I want the same thing in both because it is quite open inbetween and we eat every meal in the dining room. So it had to be a little "dressed up" but still durable and waterproof. :waiting:
and cheap. The chances of anything going down are a lot better if it is cheap.
so far we have rejected,
- wood laminate - not water proof
- tile - too hard to stand on and we drop too many things
- linolium- not dressy enough for the dining room
- wood refinishing - sadly no hardwood under the linolium like in lots of houses in the city this age
- cork - too expensive
but today I was at home depot looking for stick down vinyl tiles for the basement floor and made the most amazing discovery!
they have stick down vinyl that feels and looks just like wood laminate for just over $2 a sq foot!

make sure then when (if - but you should) pull up the old stuff that you really level out the surface from small bumps and whatnot....
The MIL redid kitchen floor in simalar stuff to what you're talking about but didnt level it out and it was thin and pliable enough that over time, all those little bumps that didnt get flattened/removed are evident in the new tile from constant wear and walking.
Doesnt surprise me as they did everything (whatever little they did do) on the cheap and completely unprofessional then wonder why things look like shit again after a year's time

Cool. I was gonna suggest floor tiles, or carpet tiles anyway (yes you can get waterproof ones), though they're a bit more expensive than what you paid.
Anyway, congrats hon, glad it all worked out. So, can we expect piccies when they're laid ?? :)
wissaboo - March 23, 2010 08:43 PM (GMT)
in our first house we just stuck tiles right over the linoleum and it still looked good 2 years later when we sold it. May have to lift it here though as there will be a seam where it ends and the hardwood begins.

awesome!
cant wait to see pictures!!

If you plan on being in the house for awhile, Wissa, you might want to consider real wood flooring. The type that essentially snaps together. I have never installed it, but I work with people who have and they said it was one of the easier projects that they have done to their homes.

don't have the money right now. And we are thinking about remodeling in about five years so if we had the money I still probably wouldn't want to spend it.

You make for a good point :mojo:
nhranger - March 23, 2010 09:18 PM (GMT)
the stick down tiles aren't waterproof either. And they are hell of a lot harder to install than you may think.
AWOLangel - March 24, 2010 03:08 AM (GMT)
good luck with the renovation
DNesh - March 24, 2010 01:01 PM (GMT)
I love my laminate. I put it in the kitchen last year & the laundry room. I have no water issues at all. I do have a huge rubber mat over the laminate in the laundry room since the dog uses that door to go in and out...and, my yard could be muddy especially this time of year. Last night I just squirted windex around the laminate in the kitchen and mopped with a swiffer. The swiffer ran out of liquid so I just squirted windex....EZ!

well I did more research and the feedback on them is pretty good. Some complaints but nothing major. People doing things like using a blowdryer on it then wondering why the shrunk after installing. Or putting them on cement and then freaking out because they had mold under them 6 months later. Well, of course you did, you didn't seal the cement lol
probably going to do the basement with the regular 1 ft sq tiles next week before our new student comes.
nhranger - March 24, 2010 08:46 PM (GMT)
make sure the floor is extremely clean before putting them down.
wissaboo - March 24, 2010 10:40 PM (GMT)

wissaboo - March 29, 2010 03:09 PM (GMT)
so I went to home depot to get the tile last night. They had it in the store but couldn't find it. Found some but there was no one able to operate the forklift to get it down. Supposedly they were going to find it today :waiting:

It almost sounds like you should be making a pictorial documentary of all of this...from start to finish.
